Heron Herald Term 4, Week 8, 2023

Kia ora koutou,

We are just two weeks away from finishing another wonderful school year, and I’m sure we all have one eye on the summer ahead.  We love all of the activities happening around school at the moment with many opportunities for our kids to expand their range of experiences on offer.

The school PTA led a fantastic night market on Thursday evening.  This annual event is a wonderful way of pulling the wider community together.  The evening was a massive success and we are extremely thankful to our PTA team for leading this.  If you’re interested in learning more about the PTA and all the fun they have while creating special events for the school community, check out their Facebook page by following THIS LINK.  A special shout out to Hayley Stronge who leads the PTA.  We appreciate the work that you’ve done to support Matua School.

CROCS

You may have heard in the media some talk about Crocs and the issues they have caused in schools.  At Matua we don’t like to get too bogged down in these kinds of things – Crocs are one of the many trends or phases that come through schools at different times.  Children love the Jibbitz and obviously enjoy collecting them.  At Matua School, children can choose what kind of shoes they wear.  The only expectation is that the shoe is appropriate for school activities.  Crocs are generally ok, although in Garden to Table they are not ideal because of all the holes in them.  However, we are having some social issues with Jibbitz.  Teachers are having to navigate misunderstandings around swapping Jibbiz at times, and unfortunately, there are occasions where they are being stolen.  We’d be interested in your thoughts – as Crocs are expensive and lots of children do wear them.  Below is a short survey to gather your thoughts…..to Croc or not to Croc?

POOL SHADE

We are pleased to have a new sun shade installed over the seating beside our school pool – just in time for the summer weather.  A special thank you to TECT who have contributed to this project, along with the shade sails over the junior playground earlier in the year.  Ngā mihi.

BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTIONS

Thank you to those who took the time to vote in our recent Board of Trustee election.  I want to express my appreciation to all those who stood for the Board, as this is a critical role in the life of the school.  I confirm that Melissa Derby and Craig Williams have been elected to the Matua School Board.  A formal notice of this election can be viewed by following THIS LINK.

The names of the full board can be found by visiting the SCHOOL WEBSITE.

ENTERPRISE DAY 2023

After a successful Enterprise Day in 2022 some of our Rākau classes are participating in it again this year.  Room 4, 5 and 22 are busy planning, developing and creating a business concept to sell. On Wednesday 6th December your child will have the opportunity to browse the enterprise stalls and purchase a product/products. All items will have a dollar value and will vary depending on the product. We recommend sending a maximum of $5 with your child which will be exchanged for tokens.
The profits from each of the stalls will be halved, with half being donated to charity and the other half being split between the group. Last year we donated $1000 to the Children’s ward at Tauranga Hospital.

VISIT TO RADUIS MATUA

On Wednesday, our Music Ensemble, Rockaleles and Recorder Karate groups joined our Rest Home Readers at Radius Matua. They played Silent Night and Jingle Bells beautifully and with confidence while the audience sang along. We are super proud of our amazing tamariki!

SCHOOL POOL

The school pool is now open.
If you would like to purchase a key to use the pool after school and at the weekend, you can do this via Kindo.
The cost of the key is $90, plus a bond of $25. A total of $115.
The bond money is refunded when you return the key at the end of Term 1, 2024.
Pay via Kindo and then pop into the school office to collect your key.
Keys are limited.

ORANGE DAY CELEBRATIONS

Our Road Patroller and TravelSMART Team have been working hard all year.  They aim to keep children safe when travelling to school and increase the number of people who walk, scooter or bike to school.  Tauranga City Council and the NZ Police are massive supporters of our students and their work, and so they were invited to Orange Day, a celebration of the good work that has been done.  The teams travelled to the Mount where they took part in the Orange Day march, and then headed to Baywave for a swim and sausage sizzle.  Thanks to Mr Hull and Steve for supporting these teams throughout the year.

SPORT

2023 has been our first uninterrupted year since COVID took its hold on the world, and boy have we made up for it! There have been so many events and so much going on but it’s been great to see our little bubble getting back to ‘normal’.
November has been a busy month to finish the term. We’ve had 6 big events happen this month with some great success.
The first was the WBOP Orienteering event which is always popular. We had 31 students compete in the event as pairs and one as an individual. Congratulations to Ava who placed 3rd overall and Ben, Oli and Edward who placed 2nd overall. The event took place at Waipuna Park which most of the children were familiar with from cross country which was a little advantage. Well done to everyone who gave it a go.
Our Rākau team Athletics Day was a huge success with 53 students qualifying for the East Cluster Athletics Champs the following week. The East Cluster Athletics was another fantastic day out with the sun shining bright and our students getting to compete in the new school sports t-shirt which they proudly wore. Matua School has some pretty fast runners with Vienna, Seb, Oscar and Isaac doing really well on the track. Our field athletes also did well with Lynwoo, Jake, Ariyah, Violet, Jack, Aideen and Tobin all qualifying for the WBOP Athletics Champs. Congratulations to everyone who participated. You are such outstanding athletes.
The Mini Cricket World Cup event for our boys was such a fun day out. We had two teams entered with one representing New Zealand and the other Namibia and they were able to play on the Bay Oval! Both teams played so well throughout the day, many playing against boys from other schools who play in their club cricket teams. Well done boys on a great day of cricket.
Our last WBOP event for the year is our girls cricket festival. This year our teams have decided to dress up in Christmas dress due to the event being held on the 1st December. What better way to start off the silly season, being a little silly and playing some cricket!
A big thank you to everyone who has already paid their sports fees for Term 4. There are still a number outstanding, however you will be emailed if this is you.
In the next couple of weeks our weeknight sports will be wrapping up for the year. As they do, can I please ask that sports uniforms are washed and returned ASAP. Next year instead of issuing the sports uniform to everyone who registers for a sport we will be introducing a new sports T-shirt that you would have seen in the newsletter earlier in the year. These sports shirts will be available to purchase from NZ Uniforms and everyone who registers for a sport for next year will be required to purchase one. There are no shorts, instead children will be required to wear their own black or navy sports shorts/bike shorts/leggings – whichever they are comfortable wearing.
Thanks for a great sporting year.
Stacey Sutherland

TO ALL GOBSMACKED FANS!

As the summer holiday season approaches, we’re excited to announce an incredible opportunity to make a meaningful impact while getting to do what you love most – SING, ACT and DANCE! Gobsmacked is thrilled to host a special Charity Performing Arts Holiday Program aimed at bringing its first FULL Gobsmacked musical to stage for students aged between 6 – 14 years old in just ONE week complete with main characters, dances, acts, singing, costumes, props and everything that comes with making our Gobsmacked shows come to life!

From January 22 – 26, 2024 we have partnered with a charity trust and invited the Morning Star Charity which supports disabled children with prostheses from China to join us. We have a very special guest coming from China named Kate who lost her legs in an earthquake. Against all odds she is still performing as a professional dancer and singer today with her new artificial legs. She will be helping me teach all the Gobsmacked songs and dances alongside me with her 9 million followers and TV film crew and together we will bring to the stage one of Gobsmacked’s most favourite musicals, ‘The Tale of Dilbert Clancy & the simply enormous gold nugget of Cooee Dupp’.

By joining us, not only will you have the chance to exercise and find your talents and gifts in the performing arts but you’ll also be contributing directly to a charity that makes a real difference. Every ticket purchased, course fee and donation made will be made directly to support the charity trust, empowering us to make a meaningful impact together.

We encourage you to spread the word among your friends and family and invite them to join us so that we can come together, celebrate the performing arts and create positive change in our community this holiday season!

To register please visit my website at www.gobsmacked.nz or contact me directly at patrice@gobsmacked.nz

We can’t wait to see you there!

COMMUNITY NOTICES

MATUA COMMUNITY MARKET

The Welcome Market is not just another market; it’s a vibrant, destination market that is family-friendly, where parents can spend quality time with their children and we get to bring community together. We believe it’s a great opportunity for our school community to come together and enjoy the best that our local small businesses has to offer. We have some awesome themes coming up, and our Christmas market on the 23rd December is looking like a fun filled day – we have a dress up day – come in costume of whatever you like and join our Christmas festivities.

We have spaces available for children to participate in having stalls. We feel this is a great way to encourage entrepreneurial mindsets within children, to come and raise some pocket money, or showcase their talents.
