Heron Herald Term 2, Week 6, 2023

Kia ora koutou,

This week we farewell one of our wonderful teachers, Erin Clarke.  We are thrilled to celebrate with Erin as she begins maternity leave and looks forward to welcoming a baby into her family.  Erin has been a positive part of the Matua teaching team for many years, first as a Beginning Teacher and then more recently as our Mathematics lead teacher after returning from a few years working in Auckland.  All the best, Erin as you enter a new and exciting stage.

ROAD SAFETY AND PARKING

We continue to work with the Tauranga City Council regarding road safety around the school, particularly at the start and end of each day. Earlier this week, the ‘Council Parking Team/Car’ drove around the school during pick-up and issued 17 tickets. Please be thoughtful about your parking, avoiding parking on yellow lines, on curbs or across driveways.

We are working with the council to see a Kea Crossing installed on Clivedene, which supports safer travel for our children.

The suggestion has also been made that turning Clivedene into a one-way road would support better traffic flow during busy times. There does seem to be some merit to that thinking. If all school families entered Clivedene Street from the Waratah Street end, the congestion would be less. How about a community effort to give this a go?

WHĀNAU HUI

You will be aware that over the past two and a half years, Matua School has been engaging with an ongoing professional learning journey focusing on how we teach Reading. This professional learning aligns with national and international research and focuses on Structured Literacy, which is at the foundation of literacy development. In Term 4 last year, we had a great turn-out at our parent information hui, where Ande Ford from Clarity Education shared the why and how of Structured Literacy.

This term, on Thursday 8th June, 2023 at 5:30pm (Week 7) we are excited to hold another parent information hui where Dr Melissa Derby, a Matua School parent, member of our Board of Trustees, and Senior Lecturer at the University of Waikato will share her research in teaching early literacy and human development. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to engage in a discussion around early literacy and how whānau can support this learning at home.

To support our planning, please let us know if you are coming by following THIS LINK and completing the form. Included is an opportunity to share what you would like to learn more about during the session.

EPRO 8

Our senior Epro 8 team came third in the Grand Final Competition at Mokoia Intermediate School, Rotorua.
Huge congratulations to Emma, Caitlin, Joseph and Harris.

REST HOME READING

Last week our students visited Matua Radius as normal for some reading time. However, we didn’t stop there… The students were given the opportunity to learn how to Maypole dance. It was so much fun and the residents enjoyed watching the group learn a new activity that they too had recently learnt.

GARDEN TO TABLE

Garden to Table would like to acknowledge the donation of the Tui garden mix from the Grice family. It is wonderful to have this mix to add to our gardens, and we will certainly notice the boost in growth in our plants once spring arrives. This mix was once again delivered and offloaded by Craig Baker from Garden Solutions, with a smile and a ” can do ” attitude. Thanks so much to all involved.

JUMPING JUNE

This is the first year Matua School has taken part in Jumping June and it is proving to be a great success. There is a fabulous atmosphere as you walk around school with all the skipping happening. It is a win win, as we work towards staying fit, while raising money for a great cause!

Don’t wait until June to start working on your fundraising profile. If you haven’t set one up for your child yet jump online and register at www.jumpingjune.co.nz. It is super easy and sharing the profile with friends and family is just as easy.
Thank you for your continued support and encouragement with this event.

JOIN OUR WEDNESDAY CHALLENGE SCHOOL GATE CELEBRATION

Every Wednesday, whether you’re doing the school run, heading to work, running errands or getting to social engagements, jump out of your car and choose to bus, bike, walk, run, scooter or carpool.

Our TravelSMART Student Group will be running a GATE CELEBRATION on Wednesday, 14th June, in the morning.

The Wednesday Challenge is about traveling around town without being in a car by yourself. So you can still use your car but you carpool with friends. Some other ways you can get around town are: biking, walking, scootering, and skating.

There are lots of reasons you should take part: it’s environmentally friendly, it’s good for your health, you are saving money on fuel, and it is safer with less cars on the road. There are some prizes to be won if you come to school without the car by yourself on our Wednesday Challenge Day!

LIBRARY

The library has been a welcome escape for our students as the temperatures drop. The library is open every lunchtime (except Friday).  Thursday lunchtime is a special day just for our youngest school members.  It’s a chance to confidently explore the library with their similar size peers!!
This term senior classes have been challenging themselves with library scavenger hunts.  This develops an awareness of the classification of books including the library dewey system and an opportunity to practice searching for information on our search ipads.  Great research skills that will assist them in any library!
We’ve had groups crocheting at lunchtimes and a wonderful afternoon making and learning how to play Ddakji.  Jigsaws have been a popular choice at lunchtimes as well as requests to read Crocodile, Fancy Nancy, Minecraft and Zac Power books amongst our younger school members.
Donate A Book Fair 2023
Please make an early note of our book character day and iconic book fair in your diaries.
Week 2
Wednesday 26 July Book Character Day – Come dressed as your favourite book character and join in with our parade!
Thursday 28 July – Donate A Book Fair (before school and after school)
Friday 29 July – Donate A Book Fair (before school)
The next holiday will be a great time to plan costumes.  However, over the next few weeks start foraging through recycle bins, dress up boxes while asking neighbours and grandparents for costume essentials and accessories to recycle.

SPORT

It is the season of cross country running at the moment and what a fantastic day we had for our whole school cross country down at Fergusson Park. The atmosphere was incredible and our parents race was probably the best one yet!
Congratulations to all our runners who raced on the day. A special mention to our year 4, 5 and 6 runners who qualified to represent Matua School at the East Cluster cross country champs at Waipuna Park last week. We took a team of 48 students who ran their little hearts out and I am so proud to say we have now got our biggest team heading to the WBOP cross country champs, with 17 runners. Such an amazing effort from everyone with 6 of our students having podium finishes. The WBOP event will take place on Tuesday 13th June at Waipuna Park in Welcome Bay.
We have quite a few tournaments approaching in the coming month with our rugby girls and boys heading off to Katikati to represent Matua School at the newly formed Rugby Tackle 5’s competition which has replaced the Rippa Rugby World Cup events. Our students have had the privilege of a BOPRU player coming out and teaching them all about safe tackle methods and our girls have even had their own session with Girl Code which are the girls rugby specialists. We wish them all the best of luck next week.
Our gymnasts have been working hard with Mrs Reid perfecting their routines ready for the annual ARGOS competitions with the year 3&4’s taking to the apparatus next Friday 9th June and the year 5&6’s the following Friday 16th June.
Our winter sports are now well under way and it has been great to see the turf being used most mornings and afternoons with team practices. Our hockey teams will have noticed the new goals which was a result of the bake sale fundraiser from last year. These goals are a huge improvement from what was previously there and we are excited to see our teams using them.
Sports Fee’s are now live on Kindo so please make sure you pay these as soon as possible.
Good luck for all the coming sports events. A quick reminder that netball and hockey are still played this Kings Birthday long weekend, but there will be no little league basketball played on Monday.

PTA

Thank you to everyone for your support with the mini gala and movie night. We really appreciated all the donations of jolly jars, cakes, prizes and other items.

These events are so well supported by our school community and we are very grateful.  It was a fun evening and we raised over 5k for the school.

If you are keen to come along to a PTA meeting to see what it’s all about, our next get together will be on Wednesday 7th June at 7pm in the school staffroom.

We will be discussing the quiz night, school disco and more.  We welcome new faces and new ideas!

Thanks

Hayley

SCHOOL SORES

We have a few cases of school sores at the moment. These are highly infectious and need to be treated with antibiotics. Once your child has received the medication they need, after 24 hours they are able to come back to school. All sores need to be covered.

ART SUPPLIES NEEDED

Mrs Scott would love some supplies so she can create more amazing works of art.

Please can you save all your carboards rolls from kitchen towel and drop them into the school office.

She would also love any newspaper you may have, without staples in the middle.

Many thanks

The school pool is now closed until term 4 and it is time to return to return your key.

Bring your key to the school office and collect your $25 key bond.

YUMMY STICKERS

2023 has already thrown us all some tough challenges, but together we will get through it.

Our orchards like many other growers in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, have been badly affected by the recent cyclone.  Yummy are fortunate to have orchards spread widely across the Bay, which has meant some of our orchards have been completely devastated but some have survived.  It has been a tricky time for sure, but we are managing to pick the majority of our crop this season, so that’s some good news

The other good news is, we will push on with the Yummy School Sticker Promo again this year.  This is something we really value being part of, and I’m sure schools will value free sports gear even more  this year.  Even in these tough times, it’s great to be part of a community and give back to schools and kids, so thanks for being part of this promotion 26 years on!

You can start collecting anytime now (if you haven’t already started), and some more good news – we will be switching over to compostable stickers in the next few months
