Heron Herald Term 1, Week 8, 2023

Kia ora koutou,

The first term of the year is flying by quickly, and we are all enjoying a late summer push with lots of sunshine!  We love the positive feeling around the school, with children enjoying the opportunity to take part in the performing arts.  We are also proud to celebrate our Rākau Team, who took part in swimming sports and had a number of children represent the school at the cluster event.  We are well underway with core learning experiences with children focused on building literacy and mathematics capabilities.  Tools from our recent mathematics teacher-only day are already being implemented in classrooms – great to see!

DON’T FORGET TO GET YOUR PRODUCTION TICKETS

Tickets for the three shows are available for purchase through Eventbrite. Follow THIS LINK or visit the school website to purchase your tickets. Performing in a full auditorium takes the event to the next level, so please buy tickets and encourage your friends and wider family to come and support the show.

Staff News

Last week our wonderful Deputy Principal Sara Lambert, announced that she is pregnant.  Sara will be finishing with us later in the year to go on maternity leave.  We are excited for Sara and James who are looking forward to having their first child.

Bikes and Scooters

We love seeing children ride to school on bikes and scooters.  With this, we want to encourage safe travel with children wearing helmets and being considerate of those around them.  We have an expectation that children push bikes and scooters through the school grounds at the start and end of the school day.  Please encourage your children to follow these expectations – not just when teachers are looking.  We also ask that adults model the same behaviours when riding bikes into the school at drop-off and pick-up times.

ENTERPRISE DAY DONATION

The Play Specialists at the Children’s Ward of the Tauranga Hospital were incredibly excited to receive such a generous gift from the Matua Senior students today.
The Senior students ran a highly successful Enterprise Day last year and chose to donate half of the proceeds to a charity – and chose the Children’s ward.
The team of Play Specialists are absolutely blown away by the gift of $1000 in Prezzie cards.
They will be spending that money very wisely and bringing a bit of fun and entertainment to make the stay in hospital a bit more fun for many, many children.
They are very grateful.
Way to go Matua kids!

CHESS BATTLES

Our passionate chess players recently welcomed students from Te Kura o Mananui in Brookfield for our first inter-school Chess Battles!

EPRO8

We had a group of students competing in the ePro8 Technology Challenge. Creativity, problem solving and collaboration skills were all on show. Our top teams will go on to compete at the inter-school event.

GARDEN TO TABLE

Our students made Veggie Nachos and Chocolate Zucchini Muffins this week at Garden To Table. They went down a treat.
They also froze tomatoes and saved some tomato seeds to plant next year.
Please can you save your jam jars as Garden to Table are planning to make jam soon. You are welcome to drop these off at the office.

SECOND HAND UNIFORM – HELP NEEDED

We are looking for a parent or a group of parents who would be willing to open our ‘Second Hand Uniform Shop’.
This usually opens each Wednesday afternoon, from 2.45pm until approximately 3.15pm. Unfortunately at this stage we don’t have anybody running it.
If you are able to help occasionally, please contact the office. If we have four volunteers, you would only need to open it once a month.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

SPORT

Summer sports are coming to end and with that comes the collection of sports uniforms and equipment bags. Once your child’s sport has finished for the season can I please ask that they are washed and returned in a named bag as soon as possible. There are still a few outstanding sports payments. These will need to be paid before your child can be placed in a team for Term 2.
Congratulations to our senior school swimmers who competed in our annual school swimming sports. We had a team of 26 students who represented Matua School at the East Cluster Swimming Championships this week. They all competed so well and should be so proud of their performance. From our team of 26 we now have 10 swimmers who will compete at the WBOP Swimming Championships in week 10 of this term.
Winter Sports registrations have now closed and teams will be emailed out next week. Thank you to all who have registered their child for a winter sport. Once teams and coaches have been notified you are able to book a practice space on the turf through me. I look forward to seeing those spaces fill up!

MATUA ANGELS

We have an amazing group of volunteers that come into school on a Monday morning. They help with anything from laminating, making resources for staff and all those jobs that help with the everyday running of school life.

It’s a great way to meet other parents and also support our wonderful staff.

If you would like to be involved, pop into the school office on Monday morning (9 -11am), have a cuppa and a biscuit, meet other parents and get involved. We really appreciate any help you are able to offer.

SCHOOL HOURS

A friendly reminder that school is not open until 8.30am. If you require childcare before these hours, please contact SKIDS either by email – matua@skids.co.nz, phone – 027 586 0408, or book online – www.skids.co.nz/Matua.

YUMMY STICKERS

2023 has already thrown us all some tough challenges, but together we will get through it.

Our orchards like many other growers in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, have been badly affected by the recent cyclone.  Yummy are fortunate to have orchards spread widely across the Bay, which has meant some of our orchards have been completely devastated but some have survived.  It has been a tricky time for sure, but we are managing to pick the majority of our crop this season, so that’s some good news

The other good news is, we will push on with the Yummy School Sticker Promo again this year.  This is something we really value being part of, and I’m sure schools will value free sports gear even more  this year.  Even in these tough times, it’s great to be part of a community and give back to schools and kids, so thanks for being part of this promotion 26 years on!

You can start collecting anytime now (if you haven’t already started), and some more good news – we will be switching over to compostable stickers in the next few months
