Heron Herald Term 1, Week 10, 2024

Kia ora koutou,

Can you believe that we have reached the end of Term 1 already!  I trust that you will have a holiday break that is just right for you, whether that be getting out for an adventure, travelling around the country or slowing down for a time and just enjoying being a family.  We also know that work for parents usually continues during the school holidays and so childcare is often required.  Skids Matua have had challenges with maintaining staffing in recent years, and so recently Samantha has taken on the Matua site.  Sam has been working as the area manager for Skids, with oversight of Matua and Pillans Point.  Bookings for the upcoming break have been low, meaning that Skids aren’t able to run a programme for the school holidays at Matua School.  I thought this was a good opportunity to survey parents who have used Skids on your experiences with the programme.  Thank you to all those who have already completed this survey.  If you missed it via Hero earlier in the week, you can still fill it out by following THIS LINK.

The term has been filled with lots of learning and activity for our students.  Yesterday some of our Year 5/6 students have competed in the first round of the EPro8 Challenge.  Round One was run by Mr Cochrane in the school hall.  The EPro8 Challenge is an inter-school science and engineering competition. Every year over 25,000 students from throughout New Zealand take part.  Students participate in a series of events: firstly within their school and then inter-school.
These events are designed to promote science, engineering and problem-solving.  Two teams from Matua School will go onto the next round and compete against other schools to go through to the finals.  We look forward to tracking their progress along the way.

Service Concept

As you may know, we are weaving the concept of Service through much of our learning this year.  During Term 1, classes have been considering the different ways that people in the community serve others.  We all appreciate the people in our lives who give to others without expecting something in return.  This is a wonderful attitude to develop in our children, too.  Consider taking the time to share with your kids how you and your whānau serve others.  Maybe you volunteer somewhere, give time to others in your community, donate finances to those in need, or give back in another way.

Policy Update – Personal Digital Devices

The Matua Board has approved a new policy regarding Cellphones and Other Personal Digital Devices at school.  This policy is generally in line with our current practices, however it includes devices such as smart watches, which are increasingly present in primary schools.

The new policy is available in SchoolDocs along with our full set of policies.  You can also have a quick read by following THIS LINK.  Instructions on accessing the full set of policies are available on the school website in the ‘Our School’ menu.

Smart watches can be worn to school. However, communication and internet functions must be turned off during school hours. Most smartwatches can shut down these functions on a schedule.  School policy requires that all communication between school and home should happen via the school office or teaching staff, and that children should not be directly calling or messaging parents during this time.  We understand that in some cases children have these devices due to after school care arrangements.  However, I would encourage you to consider the functionality of any smartwatch your child may have and decide if it’s appropriate to wear at school.

If you have any questions regarding this new policy, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

2024 NZ WATERSKI NATIONALS

Huge congratulations to Savannah S from Room 5.

She skied at the NZ Waterski Nationals last week at Piarere waterski club at Lake Karapiro.

Savannah had great results in the Under10yr division achieving bronze in both slalom and trick skiing and taking bronze overall.

ARGOS GYMNASTICS COMPETITION

These students from the Māhuri and Rākau teams represented Matua School at the Argos School Gymnastics Festival. The children compete against themselves over three sections and are awarded points and ribbons according to the judge’s grading of their performances. The children were fabulous ambassadors for our school and performed beautifully on the day. Wonderful work everyone.
Thank you to the fabulous senior coaches who helped get our teams competition-ready. Thank you too, to Mrs Gordon and Mrs McClean who supported us over this term in their lunch breaks.

MĀHURI SWIMMING CARNIVAL

These students were placegetters at our Māhuri team swimming carnival.

They were absolute dynamite in the water and it was wonderful to be able to celebrate their achievements at our team assembly.

SPORT

Thanks to everyone who took part in sport this term, whether it was as a competitor, coach, manager or supporter. We appreciate everything our volunteers do for our children and our kura. It’s been so great to see our new sports t-shirts out in the wild. They look awesome and I know the children feel amazing wearing them.
Winter sports registrations are well and truly closed and teams finalised. We rolled out a new system for these registrations where payment was required when registering. Hopefully this deters from the casual registration and removal because they didn’t like what they got. A lot of work and stress goes into organising teams and making it work for everyone, and while I do my best to accommodate requests, sometimes there is only so much I can do. Please also remember that while there may be one problem for you, I am dealing with 3 different sports codes and multiple teams within each sport.
Specialised uniforms for basketball and netball will be issued next term and our hockey teams will be wearing the new sports t-shirts with either black or navy sports shorts and navy hockey socks (unless you have the old royal blue ones).
Term 1 has been a busy one and more than usual with the annual ARGOS competitions being moved forward. Our gymnasts have risen to the challenge with very little practice time and have represented Matua School with grace and style! Well done to all our year 5&6 gymnasts who competed last week and good luck to our year 3&4 gymnasts who will be competing on the last day of term.
Swimming has been the focus of Term 1 with our seniors taking part in our senior school swimming sports then qualifying for the East Cluster Swimming Champs. From there, the top 3 swimmers from each event progress to the WBOP Swimming Champs where they compete against the top swimmers from all over Tauranga and the WBOP area. While we don’t have the results from these yet I am sure we had a couple of our swimmers place in these events. Well done to our 13 swimmers who took part.
Congratulations to Oscar and Roman who were selected to take part in the WBEET Aspiring Future Athletes programme this year. Oscar was chosen for football and Roman for waterpolo. Both had a fantastic day listening to guest speakers and completing training with some of the top players in the biz. Well done boys.
As Term 2 approaches you will see more and more classes out and about on the field practicing for Cross Country. Our school cross country will take place on Tuesday 21st May (week 4 – pp Thurs 23rd). Get out there with your kids and go for a little jog around the park! This is a super fun day for the whole school and we look forward to seeing you all there supporting our tamariki.
Have a safe and happy holiday break.
