Heron Herald Term 2, Week 10

Kia ora koutou,

Isn’t it wonderful to have a sunny end to what has been a fantastic term at Matua School.  We have loved large range of exciting learning opportunities that have been happening around the school.  If you have been around classrooms, you will have spotted our school focus that we have called ‘Out of this World!’  This Science and Technology focus has seen classes explore many different aspects of flight and space, brought to life through inquiry and opportunities to work through the Technology Process.  STEM is an important part of our curriculum, and it is fantastic to see examples of it developing throughout our school.

LEARNING SHOWCASE – OUT OF THIS WORLD

Please mark your calendars with our OUT OF THIS WORLD – LEARNING SHOWCASE.  On Thursday 3rd August, from 1:30pm till 3:00pm, we are opening up classrooms across the school to whānau.  All classrooms will be open and children will be ready to share their learning from Term 2.  Parents will be able to visit classrooms across the school and hear from students as they present the process they have been working through.  We’d love to see lots of whānau at school supporting the children.

LITERACY TOURS – TICKETS

Following on from our Whānau Literacy Hui, we are running two Literacy Tours. This is an opportunity for parents to do a walk through junior classrooms while literacy is being taught. Following the walk through, we will spend time discussing what was seen.  These groups are limited to 12 people per tour, so please book your space via this EVENTBRITE LINK.

ALL THE BEST MRS MARTIN

This term, we farewell our wonderful teacher, Mrs Martin!  Courtney has been part of the team at Matua School for over 8 years, during which time she has been a significant part of what makes Matua an excellent place for children to learn.  Courtney has led ICT practices, taught at many levels across the school and has been a very effective team leader.  Courtney, while you will be missed, we are all excited to farewell and celebrate with you as you head off on maternity leave.

CROSS COUNTRY SUCCESS

2023 has been a very successful year for our Cross Country runners.  After a fun-filled Matua School event at Fergusson Park, our top Year 4, 5 and 6 runners went on to compete at the East Cluster Event.  From there we had students move on to the Western BOP competition.  This week we celebrated as a group of Matua runners competed at the BOP competition in Ōpōtiki.  A special congratulations to Seb Bell and Oscar Jack who both finished 1st in their races.  Issac McGrath and Finley Smit both finished 3rd – all outstanding results.

REST HOME READERS

This week our Rest Home Readers were accompanied by the Ukulele and Recorder groups for our weekly visit to Matua Radius. The residents were treated to some lovely performances as well as the usual reading time. It was a very special time for the residents as they sang along to the tunes played but also a great opportunity for the students to perform what they have been learning during their lunchtime groups to an audience.

JUMPING JUNE

This week we held our big Jumping June event and what a fabulous day it was. The School was filled with a sea of red and the excitement was high!  Each team got to spend some time with professional skipper Sacha Willets who wowed us with her impressive skipping skills. They then went out to complete 6 circuits that were 5 mins long and then finished in the staff car park with a mass skip as a team to a song.

As of today our fundraising total for the Heart Foundation is $24,726.69 which is incredible!

After our visit from Sacha we are sure there are going to be a few students who continue their skipping beyond the big event day to master some skills she shared with us.  If you want to check out some more about Sacha head to her Instagram page @sachakips

Those who set up online fundraising profiles can order prizes online between 1st – 21st July. Prizes will be delivered to school an estimated 5 weeks after the closing date to School and then delivered to classrooms.

We want to thank you for your support with this event.

ALSO – thanks to Mrs Garner for leading this event at Matua School – we’ve loved it!

MOBILE DENTAL UNIT

The Mobile Dental unit will be at Matua School from: Monday 17th July 2023 to Friday, 18th August 2023.

Our Dental Team will be seeing the most overdue tamariki during this visit, and whānau will receive notification of an appointment for a dental check.

When you receive notification, please contact the team to update any contact details or changes in medical history or permissions for examination and dental x-rays.

We will aim to coordinate appointments with class teaching programmes and school activities.

Current service demands and delays weigh heavily on our teams and your kindness and support is appreciated at this time.

If you have any queries or urgent dental concerns, contact 075766752 for further help and advice.

One of Matua School’s oldest traditions is our annual Donate A Book Fair.   This will take place during Week 3 of Term 3.  Families are asked to come and enjoy the new books on display in the Library, and then choose from this selection a $5 or $10 book to donate to the school.   Each donated book will have a certificate on the inside cover inscribed with the name of the student or family who has donated it plus they get to read it first!!

Matua Library

Thursday 27 July  8.00 – 9.30am and 2.45 – 4.00pm

Friday 28 July 8.00 – 9.30am

Book Character Day

Wednesday 26 July

The day before the Matua Donate a Book Fair is our Book Character Day.  Students are asked to dress up as a book character.  Find a costume from your dress up box (we always love to see Elsa and other Princesses, Minecraft Creepers, Harry Potter, Ninjas and Superheroes) or enjoy creating from any recycled materials you can find….Mrs Wishy Washy, Gangsta Granny, Matilda, Cruella, Paddington Bear, the golden ticket, the crayons, (Where’s) Wally…!!!  A great wet day activity during the school holidays?!

 Many thanks Tracey Donovan-Grammer

YUMMY STICKERS

2023 has already thrown us all some tough challenges, but together we will get through it.

Our orchards like many other growers in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, have been badly affected by the recent cyclone.  Yummy are fortunate to have orchards spread widely across the Bay, which has meant some of our orchards have been completely devastated but some have survived.  It has been a tricky time for sure, but we are managing to pick the majority of our crop this season, so that’s some good news

The other good news is, we will push on with the Yummy School Sticker Promo again this year.  This is something we really value being part of, and I’m sure schools will value free sports gear even more  this year.  Even in these tough times, it’s great to be part of a community and give back to schools and kids, so thanks for being part of this promotion 26 years on!

You can start collecting anytime now (if you haven’t already started), and some more good news – we will be switching over to compostable stickers in the next few months
