Heron Herald Term 1, Week 7, 2022

Kia ora koutou,

Our thoughts continue to be with families and tamariki who are isolated at home with COVID in the household.  This can be a challenging time for everyone involved, either due to the degree of sickness experienced, or the impact of being off work and school.  We trust that you are navigating this time well, supporting those around you, and being willing to reach out if you are in need.  It is encouraging to hear news of us reaching the peak in the outbreak, as we all look forward to restrictions lifting and a degree of normality returning.

One of the routines we have at Matua School is where children have the opportunity to be ‘Caught Being Awesome’. When spotted displaying the characteristics of the ‘Matua Learner’, teachers can give students a stamp on his/her CBA card. Children across the school will collect their stamps until the card is full, after which they drop it at the office where it goes into the draw to win ‘Lunch with the Principal’. This year CBA winners grab their lunchboxes and go for a walk down to the Matua Cafe for a hot chocolate or maybe a real-fruit ice cream! Congratulations to our first CBA winners for 2022.

The Matua Cafe will be offering student lunches each Friday from this week. Orders need to be made before 10 am and will be delivered to school at 12:30 pm. Children will need to go to the hall entrance at lunchtime to collect their orders from Matua Cafe staff, who will hand them out. The Matua Cafe has put together a menu specifically for our students which you can see below. It will also be available on the @School App for future reference.  We look forward to a positive partnership between the school and the cafe.

Nga mihi,

Marcus Norrish
Principal

SPORT

With our summer sports term well underway it’s great to see so many happy faces telling me about their games, despite winning or losing. Or even a defaulted game, and the team just having a friendly game against themselves. It’s important to remember that as COVID cases continue to rise around the city, that we remain positive, kind and encouraging with our children surrounding these circumstances. While it is frustrating that they are not able to play their scheduled games, it is also for the safety for everyone that we follow the rules and guidelines set out by the sporting organisations. That being said, sports fees will not be altered due to defaulted games as this is completely out of our control. Thank you for your understanding.

We still have a number of sports fees that are yet to be paid. Can I please ask that you make payment on Kindo ASAP. Failure to pay will result in your child not being placed in a team next term or until the fee has been paid.

Winter sports registrations will be live over the weekend. The sports on offer over the winter terms include, basketball, hockey and netball. All year groups are able to participate in these sports so be sure to register your child. Registrations will close on Friday 1st April.

In lieu of holding our Senior Swimming Sports event this year we decided to hold a fun event for our Year 5&6 students. The Senior Swim-tastical was a fun event which involved a few lengths in the pool, followed by a short run around the streets, back into school at the Strathmore Street entrance, a hoon through the senior playground then a fun obstacle course over the field, finished with a dash down the slip’n’slide. Everyone had a great time and there were many happy faces coming down the waterslide. Thank you to all the parents who were available to line the streets and cheer our athletes on. Your support meant the world to them.

Hopefully all this beautiful weather sticks around till the end of term so we can continue to play some great sport!

MIDDLE TEAM – CLAY SCULPTURES

The middle team are very fortunate to be enjoying lessons with educators from the Tauranga Art Gallery. They are doing sculpture workshops with us – look at these gorgeous creations from Room 17.

ROOM 6

Room 6 had a great colour explosion on Friday as they enjoyed learning about the Hindu festival Holi. Mrs Matthews said that she’d never seen such enthusiasm as the students ‘bombed’ each other with coloured powder. They then went on to design and make catapults during Makerspace so the colours could be thrown even further!

HAMMERS WANTED

Our budding woodworkers in the junior school are loving the chance to create things with wood and nails.
If anyone happens to have a hammer they could donate to the school, we would love to give it a new home.
Please send it through to our school office, and we will make sure it gets into the hands of our budding builders.
Many thanks
