FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S LAPTOP
Kia ora koutou,
We have loved seeing the large range of outdoor play that children have been engaged in over the last couple of weeks. With the amazing weather we are seeing children get involved in lots of lunchtime sport, tree climbing activities and social games. Classrooms are also keeping active with plenty of structured game play and outdoor learning opportunities being set up by the teachers. I was showing a visitor around our school recently who was impressed by the incredibly diverse range of learning activities that were happening across the school. I am thankful for the wonderful staff team that work hard to prepare creative, engaging and purposeful learning opportunities for our children.
Thank you to all parents who recently completed our community survey. The Board of Trustees have been reviewing the data and will soon be sharing a summary of the results.
We continue to be thankful that school can operate relatively normally at Alert Level 2. However, across the country and within Matua there are certainly signs of the stress levels that COVID-19 has created for families and students. We are mindful of the different pressures that families may be experiencing at home. Please continue to make choices that are right for your family. While children do need to be attending school, please let us know if school systems or expectations are creating unnecessary pressure at this time. We are always happy to listen and work together to find a positive solution.

ENTERTAINMENT BOOK
LIBRARY
A big thank you to all who supported the Donate a Book Fair. By now all the donated books have been handed out to students. You may have noticed when looking at the books there was an emphasis on nonfiction books, picture books and novels to challenge our older readers. Proceeds from the fair will target our junior and middle school readers who move between picture books, small chapter books and early novels. By donating a $5 or $10 book, another further 100 plus books can be purchased to add to our great library collection!
School Librarians
We say a farewell to our Year 6 librarians who have run the library at lunchtimes with enthusiasm and expertise. A number of librarians gave up their own time to help with the Book Fair and have also worked behind the scenes to shelve books and keep the library an organised and tidy space for all to enjoy. Thank you!!!!
Our budding Year 5 librarians have been training diligently during morning tea times over the last few weeks. By week 7 our Year 5 Librarians will be working solo at lunchtimes without the support of past librarians. Already they have shown great work ethics (turning up on time), comradery (filling in for other librarians when needed) and initiative (organising and tiding the library without adult prompts!). Welcome!!!

Fun times in the rain, mud and sunshine for our senior boys and girls rugby team. They each had a great game of tackling, sidestepping and sprinting to the try line against the Pillans Point Primary School teams. A huge thank you to Mr Hull for coaching and organising the games for the students and to the parents, caregivers & supporters that went along and cheered.
Keep up the great effort for term 3 Sports
With Covid Level 2 there has been some changes to weekend team sports. A huge shout out to the coaches, managers, parents and students that are continuing with their sporting commitments.
In some codes like Basketball and Hockey that has meant no spectators, so a huge THANK YOU to parents for driving your child to these venues and waiting patiently whilst you can’t watch. Netball suspended it’s primary school competition so another huge shout out “Ka Pai” to the netball teams and coaches for organising saturdays games against some local schools here at our own Netball court so the teams can keep playing.

ALERT LEVEL 2 ASSEMBLIES
While we are at Alert Level 2, we are still working hard on looking for ways to celebrate as a community. Last week we held our assembly on the turf. The sun was out and so it was great to sit together, sing and celebrate wonderful Matua Learners with awards and certificates.
