FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S LAPTOP

Kia ora and welcome to the latest edition of the Heron Herald. The past few weeks have been full of highlights and significant achievements.

The first of these achievements was an outstanding art exhibition. I was extremely proud of our kapa haka group for their passionate performance, which was matched by the vibrant and thoughtful art pieces on display. It has been an exciting term delving into the different ways art has been used throughout time and in different cultures. I would like to acknowledge our committed staff for the additional hours put in to make this a success. Also, thank you to the many parents that attended. The students were thrilled to be able to share their learning with you.

Winter Tournament was a great success for our senior students, a chance for them to show grit, determination and teamwork. A special congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 football teams who won the East Cluster Football Tournament.

There is a growing body of research indicating that excessive screen time is linked to many forms of behavioural and mental health issues including depression, disrupted sleep, addiction, through to negative impacts on social and emotional regulation. This is especially true for games including violence. For good reason, many of these games and social media platforms are age 13 plus. Technology can have a significant impact if used correctly for learning. However, there is a range of adverse effects associated with this, too. And of course, physical activity and the correct amount of sleep are great ways to keep ourselves and our students healthy.

Next week is Maori Language week. We are looking forward to lots of celebrations, trips to the Pa site and of course a delicious hangi.

SENIOR SPEECH COMPETITION

Our Senior Speech Competition was incredibly successful this year, congratulations to all our senior students. We heard a wide variety of speeches which were entertaining, interesting and amusing.

Huge thanks to Natalie Wright from Wright Performance. Natalie gave up her time to come and judge our speeches and spend some time helping and advising our students.

WINTER TOURNAMENT

What an experience! The children enjoyed a wide range of sports such as Netball, Kiwi tag, Football, Basketball and Hockey against our local cluster of schools. They traveled to a number of venues in Tauranga and the Mount. Those who were not in a team had plenty of fun playing Tabloid Sports, a variety of games and sports at Matua School. It was clear that all students enjoyed themselves immensely.

Sport builds important values such as good sportsmanship, teamwork, being a good loser and a humble winner. The teams experienced them all. Every player had a competitive spirit, good sportsmanship, and worked together well.

Although some teams didn’t get the overall score they set out to achieve, everyone gave it their best shot. A special congratulations to the football players, who won all their games! A huge thank-you to all the refs and teachers who helped out on the big day, and to the parents who came to support their kids.

HANGI

We are having our Hangi lunch at school next Friday, the 14th September. All orders had to be returned to school last Friday so that we could place the order for food. Unfortunately, if you forgot to order a hangi for your child, we are unable to take any more orders .

Some children returned forms and ticked that they had paid via Kindo. Kindo closed with the orders last Friday. If you didn’t get a chance to pay via Kindo but ticked that you had, please pay at the office by cash or eftpos by Wednesday the 12th September.

We would like to say a big ‘Thank You’ to Pak n Save, Cameron Road. They gave an incredibly generous donation of food towards our hangi next week. Thank you very much!!!!!

CHICKEN POX

We have had lots of children with Chicken Pox. Early symptoms are a fever and spots with a blister on top of each spot. The time between exposure and sickness is approximately 10-21 days after being exposed.

If your child contracts Chicken Pox please keep them at home for a week from the first appearance of the rash or until all blisters have dried.

There is not long to go now until the Quiz Night! We have had a table become available, so if anyone is interested in getting a team of ten together and competing, please email matuapta@gmail.com to show your interest. The PTA is working really hard and it is going to be a fun filled night.

The recipe book is looking amazing!! Thanks to everyone for their support, recipes and the family sponsorship!!

We have a range of business sponsors who have come on board, and we thank them very much too!

Next week is Food Photography for the book, where we will be taking photos of specific dishes in and around the school. Thanks to parents for being so prompt in returning the photo consent forms. We want to see as many Matua kids faces as we can in the recipe book; alongside fabulous food!

We need a name for our recipe book too!! So get your thinking caps on!! More information to come!

You will be able to purchase our wonderful school Recipe Book at the beginning of December!!!

Once a month we have a meeting in the Staffroom at school. Everyone is welcome and our next one is on September 11th at 7.00pm. We would love to see you there.

PUPIL ABSENCE

With the cooler weather and the change in season, there seems to be a lot of coughs and colds and tummy bugs around at the moment. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please could you let us know.

You can phone school on 07 576 9027 and leave a message on the absentee line or you can email the office, office@matua.school.nz to notify us.

This will ensure that a close liaison between home and school is maintained, especially with regard to your child’s safety on the way to and from school. Teachers will be notified of children who will be absent each day.

If your child has had a vomiting bug, please keep them at home for 24 hours to ensure that the stomach bug isn’t spread around the class.

The Affordable Art & Artisan Fair

The Affordable Art & Artisan Fair happens on the last Sunday of every month (and December 15^th) from 11am to 3pm at the Black Sheep, Cnr SH2 and Plummer’s Point Road, Whakamarama (just north of Te Puna). We’re on every month; rain, hail or shine as the Black Sheep has large indoor spaces and covered verandah areas. There’s live music, great food and a huge sealed parking area right outside the door. We have a wide range of art, art craft and artisan products on display and for sale. Visual art, woodware, handmade chocolates, flowers, foliage, photographs, container plants, jams and pickles – “something for everyone”. The Fair is on facebook and from there you can access the monthly videos created by one of our organizing team, artist Birgitt Shannon – you’ll soon get an idea of how good our Fairs are!
