Kia ora koutou,
With the Easter break on our door step and the end of Term 1 not far away, we once again are commenting on how fast the year is going! School routines are well established, and it is encouraging to see children positively engaged in learning throughout the school. If you have been following our school updates, you will know that our strategic focus for this year is focused on Mathematics and Physical Education/Active Learning. Our teaching team are engaging in professional learning in both these areas, strengthening practice and ensuring our progammes are supporting all learners to reach their potential.
Early next term we are planning a Parent Maths Evening. At this event we will share an update on how Mathematics is being taught in classrooms, the skills and knowledge we are developing with children and how you can partner with us at home. Please pencil Tuesday 14th May into your calendar for this event. The event will run from 5:30pm – 6:30pm.
Farewell to Whaea Charlotte!
We are really sad to be saying goodbye to Whaea Charlotte at the end of Term 1. Charlotte has been a precious member of the Matua teaching team over the last two years, and is heading off overseas to explore the world. We first met Charlotte as a training teacher, working with Mrs Reid in Room 21. We quickly saw that Charlotte was a treasure and when the opportunity came up we were thrilled to employ her as a beginning teacher. The first two years of teaching is never an easy journey. However, Whaea Charlotte has excelled in her teaching practice and contributed to the school in many other ways. Charlotte has shared her love for music, her contribution to our Taha Māori team has been outstanding and skill in leading the learners in her classroom has been appreciated by us all. Please join with me in thanking Charlotte for her time at Matua School and wishing her all the best for what lies ahead.
Whakatauki
Kia hora te marina, Kia whakapapa pounamu te moana, kia tere te Kārohirohi i mua i tōu huarahi.
May the calm be widespread,
May the ocean glisten as greenstone,
May the shimmer of light ever dance across your pathway.
Today we pause for the Easter break. Because Easter falls outside the school holidays, the long weekend is extended to include a school holiday on Tuesday. This is a nationally set date that all schools are required to follow. We trust that as your family enjoys this Easter season, you will get a break as a family and find a peaceful spot in the busyness that life can bring. And chocolate – lots of chocolate!

Both the students and seniors love these visits.
One of our regular residents donated a book for us to read when we visit them. What a special gesture!
